Geography of the Housing Crisis

The housing affordability crisis is acutely geographical. While the average UK house price is roughly 8 times average earnings, in London and parts of the South East, this multiple exceeds 14. This is largely driven by a rigid planning system (Town and Country Planning Act 1947) and the strict preservation of the Green Belt, which restricts outward expansion of high-demand cities.
